What is Sciatica?

Sciatica refers to pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve, which branches from your lower back through your hips and buttocks and down each leg. Typically, sciatica affects only one side of the body.

Common Causes

• Herniated or Slipped Disc: Disc protrusion pressing on the L4, L5, or S1 nerve roots.
• Lumbar Spinal Stenosis: Narrowing of the spinal canal in the lower back.
• Spondylolisthesis: Slippage of one vertebra over another.
• Piriformis Syndrome: Spasm of the piriformis muscle compressing the sciatic nerve.

Symptoms

• Moderate to severe radiating pain from lower back down the thigh and calf to the foot
• Numbness, burning sensation, or 'pins and needles' in the leg or toes
• Muscle weakness in the affected leg or foot drop
• Pain that worsens with sitting, coughing, or sneezing
