What is Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS)?

Guillain-Barre Syndrome is a rare but serious autoimmune neurological condition in which the body's immune system mistakenly attacks the peripheral nervous system. It typically begins with tingling and weakness starting in the feet and legs, rapidly spreading upwards to the upper body and arms.

Common Peripheral Neuropathies

  • Diabetic Neuropathy: Burning feet, numbness, and tingling caused by long-standing high blood glucose.
  • CIDP (Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy): Chronic progressive or relapsing muscle weakness and sensory loss.
  • Nutritional Neuropathies: Vitamin B12, B1, and B6 deficiencies.
  • Toxic & Drug-Induced Neuropathies: Chemotherapy or toxin-induced nerve damage.

Symptoms

  • Symmetrical muscle weakness progressing from feet to legs, trunk, and arms
  • Pricking, 'pins and needles' sensations in fingers, toes, ankles, or wrists
  • Unsteady walking, difficulty climbing stairs or lifting objects
  • Difficulty with eye or facial movements, speaking, chewing, or swallowing
  • Severe cases: Difficulty breathing requiring respiratory support

Diagnostic & Treatment Excellence
